Ensemble

Undergraduate physics club

Ensemble, the undergraduate physics club of IISc, is a student-run organization dedicated to exploring and sharing the beauty of physics beyond the confines of the classroom. The club provides a dynamic platform for learning, discussion, and collaboration by hosting a variety of activities, including lectures, problem-solving sessions, paper presentations, and outreach events. We encourage members to engage deeply with the subject. Ensemble fosters a vibrant and inclusive community where students can think, question, and discover together.

Events Conducted During the 2025-26 Academic Year:

  1. IISc x Qiskit Fall Fest 2025: Jointly organized a 5-day quantum computing event in collaboration with IBM and IQTI. The festival featured talks and hands-on sessions by researchers from IISc and IBM, culminating in a Qiskit-based hackathon. For further details, visit: IISc QFF 2025
  2. Guest Seminar on Muon g-2: Hosted a seminar by Prof. B Ananthanarayan titled “Unpacking the Muon g-2,” which detailed recent developments surrounding the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment.
  3. Summer Project Exposition: Provided a platform for 4th and 5th-year UG Physics students to present their summer research explorations across diverse fields. Speakers also shared valuable insights into international internship opportunities.
  4. Mock Thesis Presentations: Organized practice sessions for outgoing BS and MS Physics majors to present their thesis work before their official defense. This offered speakers valuable feedback and gave the audience a preview of cutting-edge research from IISc's own students.
  5. Paper Presentation Sessions: Curated and organized sessions where 2nd-year UG students presented historically relevant and groundbreaking physics papers. These presentations were delivered under time constraints to a distinguished panel of professors from IISc and RRI.
  6. Alumni Talk Series: Featured insightful talks by IISc alumni Dr. Senin Ahammed AP (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) and Dr. Nandagopal Manoj (PhD, Caltech). The speakers discussed their research and provided guidance on internship and PhD opportunities in India and abroad.
  7. Publication of The Geodesic: Launched and published The Geodesic, an intra-IISc Physics newsletter featuring scientific articles from students, faculty interviews, and other engaging content.
  8. Student-Led Lecture Series: Organized comprehensive, student-run lectures on foundational topics including Linear Algebra for Physics, Classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Special Relativity, Differential Geometry, and Quantum Mechanics. These series were meticulously designed to either:
    (a) supplement the formal curriculum by covering advanced or overlooked topics, or
    (b) provide an early introduction to subjects, enabling students to apply this knowledge in projects and research well before formal coursework.
  9. Topical Physics Sessions: Hosted engaging sessions on cutting-edge research topics, such as Tensor Networks and Measurement-Induced Phase Transitions, in addition to our formal lecture series.
  10. Open Day 2025 Participation: Exhibited a range of physics experiments for the general public, with all demonstrations fully prepared and executed by undergraduate students.
  11. Publication of The Canonical: Published The Canonical, an IISc-Inter IISER collaborative Physics newsletter featuring excellent scientific articles by students, faculty etc. and thereby creating a platform of collaborative work among the IISERs and IISc.
  12. Online Meeting with Nobel Laureate: Conducted an online meeting with Nobel Laureate Prof. Barry C. Barish in collaboration with the Physics Society of IISER TVM.
  13. Introduction of HEP Reading and Discussion Group: Introduced the High Energy Physics Reading and Discussion Group, a study circle of HEP enthusiasts meeting once a week to discuss a relevant topic in High Energy Physics.
