Undergraduate Programmes at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, offers highly selective undergraduate programmes in Science and Engineering disciplines that combine strong academic foundations with a deep culture of research and innovation. Anchored in IISc’s globally recognised research ecosystem, these programmes are designed to prepare students for leadership roles in science, technology and higher education.

The four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) programme, introduced in 2011, is research-intensive by design, providing broad interdisciplinary training in the initial years followed by specialisation in a major discipline. Students may choose majors in Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. The programme culminates in a substantial faculty-guided research project, making it an ideal pathway for careers in research and academia.

IISc offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes, starting with Mathematics and Computing (since 2022) and expanding with three new B.Tech programmes from the Academic Year 2026. These modern programmes have been designed to cater to the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The goal is to integrate strong theoretical foundations, hands-on research exposure, and industry-relevant skills, enabling graduates to pursue high-quality placements in leading technology organisations as well as research and higher studies. The location of IISc in Bengaluru—India’s technology and startup hub—further strengthens opportunities for industry interaction, internships, and innovation-driven careers.
