Samasya is the Undergraduate Mathematics Club of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), dedicated to making mathematics accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone. We aim to build a strong and inclusive mathematical community within IISc. We organise a variety of activities such as:
Weekly Problem-Solving Sessions: Every week, we host interactive sessions where participants tackle 5–6 Olympiad-style problems. These sessions help build creative thinking, collaborative learning, and familiarity problem-solving techniques
- Mathematical Talks: Samasya, in collaboration with faculty and fellow students, regularly organizes talks and discussions introducing students to advanced and abstract ideas in mathematics
- Summer Presentations: Every year, Samasya organizes a seminar where typically 3rd- and 4th-year students give short talks about the research or projects they undertook during the summer. This helps presenters gain experience communicating their work while giving the audience exposure to diverse areas of mathematics.
- The Integral Cup: We recently co-organized the Integral Cup, a three-stage inter-institutional integration competition held in collaboration with Vedant Ganita Samanvaya and IIT Bombay, sponsored by Jane Street and Optiver. Student from IISc secured the 2nd place among 21 participants representing various IITs and IIITs.
- Open Day Presentations: Every year on IISc’s Open Day, Samasya presents mathematical ideas and concepts to the general public in an accessible and engaging manner through visual demonstrations, mathematical puzzles and paradoxes and much more.
- Mentorship and Guidance Sessions: We also frequently organize informal mentorship sessions where we invite seniors to guide juniors on topics such as summer internships, research opportunities, PhD applications, and course or major selection.
Details of the events conducted during the academic year 2025-2026 as of October 2025:
- Introductory session: The first year students were called during the second week of August to showcase the club's past achievements, spark interest and give a lab tour.
- Drone workshop: An introductory drone workshop was conducted where students in small groups made quadcopters of their own using kits provided by the club.
- Collaboration with IIT Bombay: The club contacted the organisers of the e-Yantra Robotics Competition from IIT Bombay to provide a 10% discount on registration fee to participants from IISc.
- Line follower competition: The club built a line follower bot using IR sensors, micromotors and the esp32 board. A team then went to compete in the technoxian world championship and got ranked 16th out of the 220 teams that participated.
